English Alive has as its mission, to be the leading provider of affordable high quality education to pupils aged between three and nine, with particular reference of provision for special needs and girls.

We believe education to be the key to poverty alleviation and this can best happen in an atmosphere with increased global awareness and mutual appreciation. We are committed to the creation of positive working relationships, especially with the UK and other English – speaking countries of the world.

In order to attain our objectives, the school has developed an intense teacher training programme, which takes place during after school hours / weekends. This covers all aspects of basic teaching methodology, with an emphasis on creative and thought provoking activities, with the aim of providing local teachers with the knowledge of international style teaching.

In addition, the special needs department attends regular training, offering practical suggestions as to how to individually cater for each pupil attending the division.

We are currently linked with two schools in the Uk – Harwick Community Primary School and Pinkwell Primary School in Middlesex, both as a means of obtaining support in minor but vital aspects such as expertise etc. and also as a means of raising awareness amongst young people in the UK of the life experiences of children in another culture i.e. in a poor African country.

OUR NEEDS.
In order to develop and extend the schools, the following outlines our proposed plans for the future:

Short term
Teacher training and English Classes for teachers

Teacher training :
1/. To enable six teachers to travel once a month from Nazareth to Addis Ababa (and vice versa) in order to share curriculum ideas and developments, engage in team teaching, deliver workshops etc.
Cost of four pounds per teacher = £ 288 p.a.

2/. To cover language school costs for thirteen teachers. Local language schools in both towns offer comprehensive language courses (four evenings a week) the benefits of which would be far reaching. Since a significant increase in teachers language ability would positively reflect upon the pupils themselves.
Cost of four month language course = £20 pounds
To provide language courses for all thirteen teachers = £ 260
Total = £548

Purchase of a computer / printer and Internet line.
1/. To enable pupils and teacher exposure to knowledge outside the confines of Ethiopia, we would like to purchase a computer and internet line.
Purchase of one computer ( local purchase ) = £ 500
Purchase of one printer ( local purchase ) = £145
Initial set up cost for internet line = £ 35
Monthly standing fee for internet line ( inclusive of 4 hours free internet access ) = £ 5 = £ 60 p.a.
Total = £ 740

Medium term

Establishment of toy library
As children at the school do not have any toys at home, this goal would enable children to borrow toys to take and play with in the relaxed atmosphere of their home, thereby extending and reinforcing the learning that they receive at school. In order to achieve this goal, there is a need for a large import of suitable toys (construction, puzzles etc) as with daily borrowing there will be significant wear and tear.

Purchase of second hand toys and games from the UK = £ 650

Shipping costs from the UK to Ethiopia ( inclusive of tax ) = £ 560

Total = £ 1210

The introduction of computer classes
In order to supplement our specialist lessons, we would like to introduce daily computer lessons. In this technological age, it is felt that computers would be an invaluable addition to the school. Basic keyboard and computer skills would be learnt, which would provide pupils with invaluable tools in later life when applying for work.

Purchase of 10 computers @ £ 93 each ( inclusive of airfreight ) from Computer Aid International = £ 930
Taxation @ £ 57 per computer = £ 570

Total = £ 1500

Our future aims.

Currently, a vast majority of our income is utilised in rental costs. In order to alleviate this, it is anticipated that grants and donations will cover the cost of construction of a specialised school building, which will include ramps / disabled toilets etc so that the school will be able to additionally cater for pupils with physical disabilities.
This saving on rent costs will enable the school to admit a significantly larger number of children of non fee paying students as well as enabling the school to hire more specialist teachers to address the ever increasing expansion of our special needs department.
